Personality & Traits

General Overview Dhael is a passionate individual and moved to extremes of emotion but unfortunately on occasions this impacts on her ability to engage in rigorous mental discipline. She can be distrustful and even predictably treacherous but there is a naivety about her that enables others to forgive her her infrequent displays of cunningness.
Strengths & Weaknesses Contrary to the usual Romulan ideals Dhael does not consider herself xenophobic and is quick to keep others in check with any racist attitudes displayed. However, she has a tendency to be harsh when faced with disobedience or even a differing of opinion and then tends to treat others with varying degrees of disdain. Dhael can employ diplomacy when it suits her and has learned to keep the Romulan trait of paranoia under check.
Ambitions Given the Romulans aversion to all things Vulcan Dhael is in the minority in having a desire to learn about Vulcans and their ideals. To this end she maintains an active interest in a dissident movement which is gaining momentum. The movement's ultimate goal is the reunification of Romulus and Vulcan, which Dhael is passionate about and considers as important an ambition as her military and engineering career.
Hobbies & Interests Given Dhael’s interest in all things Vulcan, she is learning the Vulcan game of Kal-toh, an intense strategy game which can be played alone or with others.

Personal History The Romulans and the Federation Empire had a chequered history with one another of antagonism and even open warfare and for this reason Dhael’s entrance into Starfleet as a liaison officer, although fortuitous for her, was greeted with scepticism and on occasions open hostility by fellow Starfleet officers. Dhael could empathise with the judgemental glare of the other offices. The Romulans were a headstrong race; their Empire was known for its xenophobic character and policies of extreme secrecy, subterfuge, and territorial expansionism and she had once held such firm beliefs about the Humans of the Federation Empire.

Growing up in I’Mhiessanthe, a large port City on Romulus, she had easy access to conversations among all races; although the Romulans near-paranoid reticence to reveal information meant much of the gossip was one-sided. However, this experience piqued her curiosity about the universe outside her Homeworld.
This curiosity had lead Dhael into all sorts of trouble and had brought her unwittingly to the attention of the Continuing Committee; a powerful body not to be trifled with. Dhael’s parents even voiced their concern over the name they had bequeathed her; Romulan first names were seen as a gift from one’s parents given as wish fulfilments to what they hoped life will hold for their offspring; “soaring” and “flying” could be leading Dhael in the wrong direction.

In 2372 a race known as Q contemplated producing a child with a Romulan Empress. Dhael was sixteen at the time and was hugely excited by the stir this was causing throughout the Romulan Empire. However, this excitement was not share by the Romulan Senate and the Praetor took control of the situation and thwarted the union. Nevertheless, Dhael’s behaviour had been brought to the attention of the Continuing Committee and in an attempt to reign in her impulsive and increasing wayward conduct, the Committee ordered the Senator of the province of Mhiessan to do something.

With her parents’ consent Dhael was sent, protesting, to the Imperial War College. Although a reluctant student to begin with she soon found the environment and subjects studied engrossing. Cadets from the Romulan Governments intelligence agency, Tal Shiar, also trained at the College but Dhael kept her distance from these students. Just after the time of her birth in 2360 a Commander Konsab, a military history instructor at the Romulan Intelligence Academy, spoke of the difference between the Romulan military and the Tal Shiar as the main theme in his classes. He reverently believed it was of the upmost necessity for military personnel to trust one another and he contrasted this with the Tal Shiar's tendency to distrust their associates. Dhael’s father had sat in the auditorium during this lecture and reiterated these wise words as a warning to his daughter before she joined.

Engineering appealed to Dhael’s personality; she enjoyed solving problems which helped control her impulsiveness and focus her mind and she was located at the source of a ship’s main power system; it’s control centre; it’s heart and although easily moved to emotion she enjoyed the camaraderie afforded by the position. Dhael rose through the military ranks quickly after her initial training and at the age of 23 years in the year 2379 was assigned to the IRW Valdore, one of the few ships of the Romulan Star Empire that was commanded by a female; Commander Donatra. Equipped with disruptor cannons and torpedo launcher the warbird could attack with venom and defend itself admirably with deflector shields and a cloaking device. In 2152 the Romulans were the first known race to develop cloaking device stealth technology and by the time of Dhael’s recruitment onto the IRW Valdore the Star Empire had perfected this technology.

Although inferior to Federation Starfleet the Romulans ships were superbly engineered and piloted. Unfortunately the IRW Valdore was critically damaged when it came to the aid of the USS Enterprise-E in attacking the rogue Reman warbird Scimitar in the Bassen Rift. In order to assist the Enterprise crew in recovering from this conflict, Commander Donatra released shuttles from the IRW Valdore containing medical personnel and supplies. This act of compassion stayed with Dhael. It was during this crisis situation that solidified Dhael’s decision to remain within the Engineering Division.
